2003 - Master's degree in editorial, economic and technical translation from ESIT, France's top translation university (École Supérieure des Interprètes et des Traducteurs, Université Paris III-Sorbonne Nouvelle: ESIT).

A graduate of this programme also receives the Translator's Diploma awarded by ESIT.

The 3-year postgraduate degree course is long and arduous. As well as general and technical translations, it also includes research methodology, linguistics, terminology and economics. Coursework projects must be prepared and presented every term. My language combination was English as target language, French as source language. However, success in this combination required being able to produce proficient translations in both directions (FR-EN, EN-FR).

The course covers many different subject areas and specialist knowledge often becomes necessary.
- Technical areas include: nuclear energy, environmental issues, automotive engineering, industrial production techniques, transport, medicine, pharmaceuticals, IT.
-   Economic topics include financial markets, macro-economic policy, business culture, company reports, etc.

It also includes a minimum of 3 months work experience ('stage'), and a lengthy terminological dissertation.

The qualification guarantees that graduates :

  • have translation skills which are learnt firsthand from experienced professionals
  • use proven research methods and working criteria
  • have in-depth comprehension abilities and rigorous terminological correctness
  • show proficient writing abilities in different styles in different languages.
